Surgery is just one step in your recovery, the real progress happens in rehab, even if our surgeon friends might disagree. Whether you’ve had an ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, meniscus trim, or spinal procedure, our South Melbourne physios will guide you through each phase so you know exactly what to do and when.
What to expect in the early phase of post-surgery rehabilitation
- – Protect and reduce swelling. Ice or heat as appropriate, gentle range of motion, and elevation if required. The tissue is grumpy from being played around with in surgery so we need to get it happy again, and respecting the surgery itself is a great way to do this
- – Pain management. We work alongside your surgeon’s plan to help you stay comfortable and moving. We can give you advice on what to do if things are escalating in terms of your pain, and refer you back to the surgeon if required.
- – Mobility basics. We’ll teach you how to use your crutches, braces, or slings used correctly so you can safely get around. This also includes basic day to day activities which might be more challenging like dressing and showering.
- – Activation. We want to minimize strength losses and muscle wasting so we will work closely with you to you can switch on the right muscles again (quads, glutes, rotator cuff) to prevent deconditioning.
